QuestionPlenty of blooms but no fruit. Vines look healthy. There were hundreds of bees all over an oregano bush, but not venturing to the melons or cukes. Tried pollinating with a small brush but still no fruit. What to do?
AnswerHi Jeff,
Thanx for your question. That's an unusual problem. Usually, the problem with fruit set on watermelons and cucumbers is lack of pollinators. With watermelon, every 7th flower is generally a female flower. The oregano plant may be luring the pollinators away from the melons and cukes. I would set some pots with some small yellow, orange or red flowers around the melons and cucumbers. It's odd that you hand pollinated and still got nothing. Usually, pollination is finished by noon. Rainy days and especially hot/humid days can have an adverse effect on pollination but I'm not a vegetable expert.
I'd like to direct you to one of our experts Elyse Grau. If you click on Home/Garden and then click on Gardening and the Click on Fruit...you'll find Elyse. She is also listed under the Growing Vegetables category where most people post questions for fruit and vegetable gardening. I hope this helps.
