QuestionI opened a yucca seed also know what do i do with the seeds and the moth? Could I put the worm and all the seeds and pods all together under a plant? pr somewhere what does he become and how long?
AnswerHi Helen,
Thanx for your question. The yucca moth has a symbiotic relationship with yucca here in North America because the yucca is pollinated by the yucca moth who lays her eggs in the flower and when the seed capsule forms, the yucca moth worm eats some of the seeds then drops to the ground and buries itself, forming a pupa. The pupa later becomes a yucca moth and so goes the cycle of life between the yucca moth and the yucca.
You can separate the seeds from the seed capsule and plant them individually. Some may require a cold period either by leaving them outdoors for the winter or putting them in a damp paper towel and sealing inside a plastic baggie and placing in the fridge for 90 days or so. I just pressed the seed into the soil and lightly covered them. When they germinate, they will look like grass. It will take several years for them to get to any appreciable size. Very slow growing. The quicker way to get a good sized plants is to take one of the "pups" or side growths off the main mother plant.
If you want the yucca moths to survive, I would just leave the seed capsule be and allow nature to take her course. The seed capsule you opened you may plant the seeds and just toss the worm under the plant. It may or may not survive. I really don't know. I hope this helps.
