propagating cherry seeds

Question
Are there any special instructions for propagating cherry seeds? Do they need to be refrigerated first? What time of year is best for starting them? Or does one just throw them in a flower pot and hope for the best. This will be done in southern Oregon.

Answer
Hi Genie,
Thanx for your question.  When you use our Search (FIND) box above, this will often help you find a quick answer to your question which may have already been asked.  Propagation of fruit tree seeds is a very popular subject and there is a lot on this in our archives.

First, be aware that most fruit purchased in the store is a product of a hybrid.  That means that the genetics of the plant are not stable and the resulting progeny most likely will not resemble the parent.  In most cases, this means the progeny will be inferior in taste, health, looks, hardiness, etc.  Breeders take different traits and build on them during hybridization.  In our culture, most of the traits built on are not for taste, unfortunately but for uniformity, ability to withstand shipment, fresher look (even though they may not taste as fresh...), etc.  There are some that are bred for taste.  Additionally, once you have sprouted your cherry seed, it will be 5-7 years before you see fruit.

With all of that said, some folks enjoy the exercise anyway and I see no harm and one can only learn from and enjoy this endeavor.

I prefer to start this process in October to December.  Take cherry seeds and wash them.  Wrap them in a damp paper towel and seal them inside a plastic baggie.  Place the baggie inside the refrigerator for 90-120 days.  After that, plant the seeds 1/2 inch deep in good potting soil and return to warmth.  Seeds should begin sprouting in 30 days and so on sporadically.  When the seedlings are large enough to handle, gently prick them out and plant in separate pots until they are 6-8 inches tall.  At that point, they can be planted outdoors but they'll need to be placed in the shade for 10 days before planting out so they can acclimate to the outdoors.

You can also plant the seeds in a pot or nursery bed in September.  Keep them clear of weeds.  They should germinate in the spring.    I hope this helps.
Tom
