QuestionHello,
I hope you can help or direct me to someone who might help me.
I have asparagus plants that are four years old when I purchased
the plants they were supposed to be male plants but last year a lot of them set seeds now I have starts all over the garden. I have raised beds, Had I known that they spread all over I would have planted them outside the garden then they could spread and be cut by lawn mower.
This year ALL asparagus plants are seeding how on earth do I
control them......
Thank you,
Mike
AnswerHi Mike,
Thanx for your question. The quick and easy way is to pull up the plants and start all over again with male plants purchased at a reputable on-line sources such as Nourse - http://www.noursefarms.com/ or at a local garden center where they will guarantee that you are only getting male plants. Preen will prevent seeds from germinating without harming established plants but small plants that are coming back from next year won't be affected. The best way is to heavily mulch your plants. This will make it difficult for seeds to germinate. I would use cardboard or newspapers as an underlayment and then top it off with straw. I hope this helps.
