QuestionIs it true Texas is too hot to grow Cherry Trees? If so r there any alternatives?
AnswerHi Pamela,
Thanx for your question. Here is what Texas A&M says about cherries in Texas.
Cherries. Most of Texas lacks sufficient winter chilling needed to produce a normal bloom. Sour cherry varieties, such as Montmorency, bear with fair consistency in North Texas. Sweet cherry varieties are winter-killed because of fluctuating temperatures and are unadapted to all of Texas.
I think the problem with sweet cherries is similar to what we have up north even here in Kansas is that temps can get mild during the time the sweet cherries bloom only to be killed of by a late cold spell (fluctuating temps), yet peaches often have good years up here. The best thing? Contact your local county extension agent. If you'll give me your county, I'll get you contact information. I hope this helps.
