QuestionHow deep do I plant the seed or is this one to press in soil no covering? I have collected seed last season and stored it dry. I read about putting in the refrige, so I did but not all winter. Does that make a big difference about refrige time?
AnswerSeeds harvested from your own plants should always be dried out for three days and then placed in a sealed plastic bag. I usually recommend storing them in the refrigerator for at least two months to simulate dormancy. Although this is preferred, it is not absolutely essential. Keep in mind that in nature, seeds fall to the ground in warm climates and still germinate. The important thing is simulating the conditions for your area.
In regard to planting depth, always plant seeds 3 times their diameter. In the case of milkweed seed, sow them 1/4 inch deep. For other seeds, a general rule of thumb is very small seeds should be sowed near the surface and gently pressed down. Most medium sized seeds should be planted just below the surface. Larger seeds need to be planted 1/2 inch deep. When in doubt, error nearer the surface.
