QuestionWe have two snowball bushes. One has pom pom shaped flowers and the other has more of a flat white flower that has flowers on the outside of the bloom and seed looking in the middle. I know that we wait until the blooming is over to prune them, but how much can we prune them back without damage? The one with the flat blooms is getting huge and needs to be shaped. nccdj
AnswerHi Sheila,
Thanx for your question. In general, with viburnums (snowball bushes), you only want to prune dead or diseased wood. The blooming buds begin to form right after the blooming period. If you prune too severely, this could result in the plant blooming sparsely or not at all. If the plant has become large and unruly, you may need to do that and then wait 1 to 2 years to get the old blooming back. I hope this helps.
