Questioni have a neighbor that has some real old apple and cherry trees in her yard .i was wondering if i can take a cut limb off the tree and sprout it some how .thx for your time an info .
AnswerHi Joe,
Thanx for your question. Cuttings from fruit trees are difficult to root. They are best grafted onto hardier root stock which is the way almost all fruit trees except the heirloom/heritage fruit trees are propagated. I'm not experienced with grafting but here's a link you may want to take a look at. I think, it's not difficult. It just takes some practice. Sometimes you can order rootstock from certain local nurseries. Find a nursery that sells a lot of fruit trees and ask about ordering root stock. I hope this helps.
This link from the University of Minnesota is highly recommended.
