growing wisteria from seed

Question
How can I successfully start wisteria from seed?  They seem to be hard and I wondered if they should be soaked and then peirce the hull or just plant them in the soil?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.  Ineta

Answer
Hi Ineta,
Thanx for your question.  In my experience, wisteria are not at all difficult to start from seed.  Being a member of the pea family, they have had a tendency, for me at least, to germiate quickly, like most legumes do.  Soak the seed for 24 hours in lukewarm water to help soften the coating or nick the seed with a sharp knife.  One thing you should know is that it will take upwards of 15 years to get a bloom from wisteria started from seed.  I hope this helps.
Tom
