Mulberry trees from seed pods?

Question
Can I grow mulberry trees from the seed pods? If so, how do I do that? Marianne

Answer
Hi marianne,
Thanx for your question.  Mulberry trees do not have seed pods.  The seeds are located in the berries that grow on the tree after it blooms.  The berries are usually dark purple or redish purple.  Birds often feast on mulberries and spread the seeds far and wide.  Seeds can be obtained from the berries by pressing the berries through a fine sieve and then washing the pulp and straining the tiny seeds out of the pulp.  Generally, sow the seeds on top of the soil, moist soil and then place the pot inside a plastic baggie for 60-90 days and place in the fridge.  Bring out to the warmth and remove the plastic baggie.  Keep the soil moist but not soggy.  Germination should occur sporadically after a few weeks.  Transplant the seedlings to separate pots when they are large enough to handle.  New seedlings grow rapidly.  Keep under lights (40-watts, flourescent, suspended 8 inches above the seedlings...).  After the last frost, place the potted seedlings outdoors in the shade for 10 days and then plant in full sun.  I hope this helps.
Tom
