QuestionHi Tom, can you tell me how to start Sun Flower seeds? I believe you have to soak them in water for a certain amount of time and then score them before planting them. And then, how deeply? Can I rake them into the ground?
AnswerHi Michele,
Thanx for your question. You do not have to soak sunflower seeds and you also don't need to score them. They germinate rather nicely just planted like other seeds deep enough to be covered with soil. Keep soil moist and warm. Germination occurs in 10-14 days. Seedlings will get leggy if there is not sufficient light. If you're starting them indoors, make sure you can put them out as soon as they germinate otherwise they will get long and limp. I wouldn't recommend raking them into the ground. This is messy and inefficient. The seeds need to be covered with soil. Plant seeds about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep depending upon how large the seeds are. Large seeds would be 1/2 inch deep. I hope this helps.
Tom.
