QuestionI have a large sycamore tree that has just produceded seeds. I would like to propogate them. What is the best method to ensure a fairly high germination rate?
AnswerHi Eddie,
Thanx for your question. Sycamore seeds do not require stratification or any other special pre-germination treatment. Plant them 1/8 inch deep and they should germinate over a period of several weeks beginning after 14 days. Keep them soil moist but not soggy. An average temperature of 75癋 or 24癈 should be sufficient. A lot of times some sycamore seed will not be viable because of poor pollination. Just make sure you have plenty of seed on hand and you should get goood germination. Starting seeds in the spring is recommended time of year. Gently prick seedlings out and plant in separate pots when they are large enough to handle. Place the pots in the shade outdoors after the last frost for about 10 days to acclimate the seedlings to the outdoors. Then they can go in full sun. I hope this helps.
