yuccas and others after freeze

Question

yuccas and palm
We have a lot of plants that were severely effected by one of Texas' worst freezes this last winter. Our Yuccas have all died at the tops and bent, our sagos are all brown (a few green leaves), the agave are coming back, but have a lot of dead leaves, and some palms were effected. I am not a green thumb at all. Are they salvageable? If so, what to do? I'm mainly concerned what to do with the yuccas and sagos. For the palms and agave, do I just clip the dead leaves? To what point? Any advice would help.

Answer
Hi Shannon,
Thanx for your question.  Two years ago, I was down in Orlando, visiting my brother as I do twice a year.  They had just had a severe, killing frost and it looked like everything was dead but it wasn't.  They basically had similar plants to yours and while the yucca really suffered, they did eventually come back.  A couple of the crotons and tis died but almost everything else came back.  Try to remove as much of the dead growth as you can and just wait.  It's already getting warmer and from the looks of your picture, your plants are alive, they've just been shocked and it will take them some time to come out of it.  You may want to side dress them with some composted manure which will provide them with nutrients to help them mend faster.  I hope this helps.
Tom
