QuestionQUESTION: I am growing a few redwood trees from seeds. I actually had really good luck getting them to sprout, over a 50% success so far. They really grow great until the seed decides to fall off the top of the two small needles. After this occurs, the trees start to bend over and the end of the needles begin to shrivel. One tree completely fell over and broke. They are about 2 inches in height and I water them ever 3 days or so. I have read to not over water since they are very unforgiving, but I am a little out of my element here. I was hoping for some help.
Thanks,
Cale
ANSWER: Hi Cale,
Thanx for your question. I'm going to refer you to Jim Hyland, who is our Allexperts Expert on Trees. Jim has a lot of experience having worked for the U.S. Forestry Service. I'm sure he is much more qualified at answering this tree question than I am. If you will go to Home/Garden and click on Trees and then click on Trees you'll find Jim. I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Mr. Hyland said that it was out of his expertise as well, do you know of anyone else that may be able to help me?
Thanks,

AnswerHi Cale,
One thing is you are watering them too often and I'm wondering if they're getting damping off disease which is a fungus caused by warm, moist conditions. The seedlings only need to be watered once a week. Keep them in a cool place say 50-60癋 10-16癈, a fan set on low to keep the air ciruclating will help. I used to sprinkle milled sphagnum moss on the potting soil after I planted seed. This really kept down the molds and fungus that can sometimes attack young plants.
I did a little reading on this after I sent you to Jim and now I think it 's just a matter of fungal attacks. The seedlings are very prone to it. The method above should counter that. Let me know how it goes.
