QuestionTom, We have a copper beech that is in decline and will be taken down probably in the next two years. We've noticed a large increase in seedlings each spring and were successful in digging out some germinated offspring this year. We have about 5 copper beaches in plastic 6inch pots, they've grown all summer and fall and are now about 6 inches tall. What should I do with them over the winter? Bring them inside? Put them in the garage? Will bringing them inside cause them to be less resilient trees? I am so happy they are growing and I want to keep it that way! Thanks for any help you can provide.
Kind regards,
Kerry
AnswerHi Kerry,
Thanx for your question. The copper beech seedlings need to go through winter dormancy and they need to be exposed to the cold. You can either put the potted seedlings in a cold garage or shed watering them once a week, or, place the pots someplace outdoors where they are protected from the north wind. Mulch them with straw and make sure they get moisture once a week if there is no snow or rain. Don't bring them inside to the warmth. Not allowing them to go dormant will weaken and even kill them (eventually). I hope this helps.
Tom
