Juniperus Davurica Parsonii

Question
Hi Tom, It's me again, but with a different question! T have some cuttings of the Juniperus Davurica "Parsonii'. Can I propagate by cuttings? If so What type of media do I use? And how to clip? Thanks again Tom.How long does it take to root?
Betty

Answer
Hi Betty,
Thanx for your question.  I obtained this information from Floridata - http://www.floridata.com/ref/j/juni_dav.cfm

Best propagated by tip cuttings or stem layering. Cuttings of ripe wood taken in fall and winter can be started without mist or bottom heat. Parson's juniper also can be propagated by layering: Girdle (scrape away the bark from) a young, fast growing stem about 10 in (25.4 cm) back from the tip, bend it up, and bury the girdled part in the ground. It may take several months for roots to develop before you can sever the new plant from the parent. Leave it in place for a few more weeks, then prune off the growing tip to encourage the new roots even more. Eventually, you should be able to dig up the new plant and replant it where you need it.

As far as the media go, use damp sand or perlite.  Dip into rooting hormone.  The cuttings only need to be 4-6 inches long.  From cuttings, rooting can take 8 weeks or more.  You'll have to check periodically by gently probing around the cutting.  I would clip off the cut end at an angle to expose the raw cutting to the rooting hormone.  I hope this helps.
Tom
