Strawberry Guava Trees

Question
Hi Tom, Just wondering if you knew if I could start a Strawberry Guava tree from seeds from the fruit. They are originally native to Brazil & also Hawaii. I reside in Mexico & thought they would grow here as well. If so how should one proceed. Thank you. Julia in PV

Answer
Hi Julia,
Thanx for your question.  If the plant from which you obtained the seed is not a hybrid, the resulting seedling should be identical to the parent.  Otherwise there could be any number of variations.

Plant the seeds as soon after their removal from the fruit as possible. They may be sown in flats or pans of light sandy loam and covered to the depth of 1/4 inch. When the young plants appear they should not be watered too liberally. After they have made their second leaves, they may be transferred into small pots. Because they are somewhat difficult to transplant from the open ground, they should be grown on in pots until ready to be planted in the orchard. They will tolerate temps down to 24癋/-4癈.  You shouldn't have any problem with them in Mexico.  I hope this helps.
Tom
