Growing Prairie Dropseed from Seed

Question
Hi,
I really would like to expand my prairie dropseed grasses next year and have collected seed from my existing grasses this fall. Now what? Do I cold store them for a period of time? If so, how long? I think I'd like to start them in small pots next spring under lights so they have a head start. I'm in northern Illinois (Zone 5).
Thanks much for your help!
Ron

Answer
Hi Ron,
Thanx for your question.  Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) seeds benefit from a cold/moist period of 30-60 days to ensure maximum germination.  I would place the seeds in a damp cloth and seal inside a plastic baggie and leave in the fridge for 30-60 days and then press the seed into soil, lightly cover and keep in a warm environment (75癋/24癈). Germination should occur in 10-21 days.  I hope this helps.
Tom
