Bing cherry seed propagation

Question
I read your response about propagating bing cherry seeds by conditioning them in the refrigerator.  That's great news.  I live in Maryland.  Bing cherries are now in the stores.  If I put a seed in the fridge for 90 days, it'll be Sept/Oct when it comes out plus the 30 day germination period. Will the seedling survive the winter?  Can the seeds be held over until say November before they are conditioned?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Joseph,
Thanx for your question.  The seedling resulting in Sept/Oct will most likely not survive the winter.  Yes, you can save the seed until November and put it through the cold stratification/vernalization process then.  As I have said in many, many responses to this question, most fruit trees produced in the U.S. are hybrids grafted onto hardy rootstock.  Hybrid means the seed of the fruit you buy in the store will produce a plant and fruit that will most likely be inferior to the parent plant.  That doesn't mean it won't be edible or useful, it just won't be the same plant because the genetics of hybrids are unstable and revert back to previous generations.  Also, a fruit tree started from seed will take 5-7 years to produce fruit.  I hope this helps.
Tom
