QuestionOur friends have a fuyu persimmon tree that bears the sweetest fruits but the fruits have no seeds. How do I go about rooting or propagating one of the branches, or how does one grow a Fuyu persimmon tree without any seeds available? Thank you. jasmine isara
AnswerHi Jasmine,
Thanx for your question. The Fuyu persimmon is a hybrid and hybrids are almost always grafted onto hardier rootstock and that rootstock is probably the common American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana). The Fuyu is Diospyros kaki and it is very difficult to grow from cuttings. It will often send up suckers from it's roots and these can be dug up and easily rooted or they will already have some roots on them. All Fuyus are grown from grafting. I am not a tree expert or a grafting expert but here is a link you may find helpful.

I hope this helps.

Hi Jasmine,
I gave you some flawed information. The Fuyu is an Asian persimmon and is often grafted onto the rootstock of Diospyros kaki. In other parts of the USA, this tree is grafted onto Diospyros virginiana to increase its cold hardiness. In California, the most common rootstock used to be Diospyros lotus. I apologize for any confusion.
thx,
Tom
