QuestionCan I grow poplars from seeds? Ours is dying but is producing seeds. How should I handle them and plant them for best success so we can replace the dying tree?
AnswerHi Green NV,
Yes, you can grow poplar from seeds. Poplar cotton wood (Populus deltoides) seed is very short-lived. It should be sown as soon as it is released from the catkin. Surface sow or lightly cover. Keep moist but not soggy. Germination occurs in a few weeks. Prick seedlings out gently, whne large neough to handle. Plant in separate pots until sturdy enough to go outdoors and after the last frost. Acclimate in the shade for 10 days before placing in full sun. I hope this helps.
