QuestionI am considering planting my entire lawn (2000sq ft) with thyme seed (not plants). I've planted a small section about
7 weeks ago but nothing happening yet). What is the wisdom
(or lack thereof) of what I am considering. How will it look and how long with it take to grow into a presentable lawn.
I get many deer and know they don't like thyme and I don't like mowing. I am using creeping thyme.
thanks much, wonderful service you are performing.
Hugh
AnswerHi Hugh,
Thanx for your question. I think the idea of planting an entire lawn of creeping thyme is novel but I don't know how successful you'll be. If the thyme haven't germinated by now, the seed may not be viable. You didn't say where you were located so it's hard to give you much advice without knowing your local growing conditions. I would imagine that it will take several seasons for the thyme to become established in your front yard. I'm not sure that it will adapt well to very much foot traffic. I would also think that after a while it will start looking ratty and unkempt because of its nature of getting woody and then there might be some barespots develop that you will have to fill in with new plants. Personally, I don't think I would do it because I think it would involve even more care than a conventional lawn. It's just my opinion though. There's no harm in trying it. If you don't like it, you can always plow it under and reseed with grass seed. I hope this helps.
