oriental poppy pod

Question
Hi Tom,I would like to ask what should I do with a oriental poppy seed pod that I have been given recently which has been cut from a recently flowered plant .The pod is still green as the leaves have only fell off the plant in the last few days ? i would like very much for it to produce flowers next year.
Thanking you in advance, Allan.

Answer
Hi Allan,
Thanx for your question.  If the pod was cut from the plant while it was still green there is a good chance the seeds were not allowed to mature and ripen and therefore they will not be viable.  Seedpods should be allowed to dry on the plant and turn brown or gray-brown.  When you shake the pod, you may be able to hear the tiny seeds inside.  If the seed were viable, you would be able to shake them out onto the ground in the desired planting place.  You may want to gently remove the top of the pod to get the seed to fall out easier.  Shake the seed onto the ground in September and you should have new, flowering plants the next Spring.  I hope this helps.
Tom
