apricot pits

Question
How long does it take for apricots to grow??? Can I root the pit in water first?

Answer
Hi Paul,
Thanx for your question.  In order get the apricot seed to germinate, it needs to experience 60-90 days of a chilling period to break dormancy.  You can do this in two ways.  First, put the seed in a damp paper towel and place it inside a plastic baggie and leave it in the refrigerator for 60-90 days.  Then plant the seed in a pot about 1 inch deep and keep it warm (75F).  Germination should take place in a few weeks to a few months.  The other method is to plant the seed in a pot and leave it outdoors for the winter as long as you have winters with sustained temperatures below 40F for 60-90 days.  Be sure to keep the pot watered and germination will take place in the spring as soon as the days are consistently warm.  I hope this helps.
Tom
