QuestionWill Blueberries planted by seed have any success on a South Pacific island?
AnswerHi Scott,
Thanx for your question. Because the blueberries I know of require a cold period to grow well, I don't think they would be successful in the South Pacific. Blueberries require a certain number of hours at 40F or below in order to set fruit the next season. I think also, because there would be no dormancy period the shrubs would eventually exhaust themselves and die. There are some varieties being grown in Florida, California, New Zealand and Australia but even these require 150 hours of cold and there is sufficient cold areas in North Florida and California that can accommodate this. I hope this helps.
