persimmon propogation

Question
I have a large persimmon tree, male.  There are a lot of saplings coming up around it.  I assume from the roots of the parent tree.  Will all of the saplings be male as well, or is is possible for them to be female

Answer
Hi Robert,
Thanx for your question.  Persimmon trees are known for producing a number of suckers.  A sucker is a clone of the parent and should maintain all of the characteristics of the parent plant.  I would imagine that the suckers would be whatever sex the main tree is.  There are some persimmons that are considered perfect or they have both male and female flowers on them.  With all of this said, I could find no reference that either disputed or confirmed my reasoning.  There is a tree expert here on Allexperts, Jim Hyland, who may be able to answer your question.  He has extensive experience with the U.S. Forestry Service.  He is in our tree forum.  I hope this helps.
Tom
