planting seed out side

Question
First thing is I live in Ohio. I have seeds from a seed pod of a daylily. I would like to know if I could plant these seeds outside with out starting them indoors. I have them stored in the freezer from last year.

Answer
Hi Dave,
Thanx for your question.  Plant the seeds in a pot and cover them lightly with soil.  Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.  Place in the sun and don't let the pot dry out.  Because you had the seeds in the freezer, this may have satisfied the stratification requirement although in the future, I would put the seeds in the fridge and not the freezer to prevent frost damage.  Your day lilies should emerge in about 21 days more or less.  They will look like grass.  After they get large enough to handle, start feeding them with a half strengh 12-12-12 liquid fertilizer and plant them in separate cells.  Don't plant them in the garden until they are of a manageable and identifiable size.  They will benefit from a garden bed with well drained soil and full sun.  I hope this helps.
Tom
