QuestionMy daughter and I took some seeds from apples we bought at the grocery store and did a science experiment. We started about 25 seeds and 2 of them have made it a year in the house and are ready to go outside this spring. I'm wondering when and how to start pruning them, they have taken off growing again and are getting really tall. One's top started growing again fast, the other has new little ones starting at the bottom. Should I trim that top part back to the height it was to encourage growth lower on the tree? I'd like to give them the best chance possible at making the transition from the house to outside also because we already have a year into growing and nurturing these babies.
Thank you for your time
Alona
AnswerHi Alona,
Thanx for your question. Take the seedlings outdoors after the last frost and place them in a shady location, still in the pots, protected from direct sun, rain, wind, hail, cold, etc., for about 10 days. After that, you should plant them in full sun. I really, wouldn't start pruning a fruit tree until it is 3 or 4 years old. It sounds to me like maybe your saplings got leggy because they have been indoors so long. You can use stakes and flexible cloth or wire to support them as they grow. Also, give them a fruit tree spike fertilzier (available at most nurseries)following the directions on the package. Make sure the saplings are watered once a week if you're not getting regular rain. I hope this helps.
