QuestionHi,
can blueberries grow form seed without cold period?
about a month ago ( in jan ) i took a few seeds out of a fresh blueberry with twitzer and placed them in a pot right away. I keep them moist and in room temparature near the window.
Is there any hope for them to grow?? :-(
AnswerHi May,
Thanx for your question. Some varieties of blueberry require no cold treatment while others do. If you don't know the variety it is recommended that cold treatment be applied. Most blueberries are the result of hybridization unless you have collected wild blueberries. Hybridized blueberries have seed that in general will not come true to the parents. That is, the plants and fruits will most likely be inferior to the parent plants. That doesn't mean the fruit won't be edible. Additionally, it can take 3-5 years for maximum fruiting from seed. With that said, place the fresh seed in a pot and lightly cover them with soil, place inside a plastic baggie and then place inside the refrigerator for 3 months. Bring out to 70-75F temps for a couple months. If no germination this could be a variety of blueberry that requires alternate warm/cold/warm periods for germination. If that's the case, place the pot back in the fridge for another 3 months and then bring out to the warmth again. This time the seeds should germinate. Keep under lights (40watt shop lights at 8inch above the pot) until the plants are large enough to handle (have several sets of leaves) and gently prick out of the soil and plant in separate pots. After the last frost take outdoors and place in a shaded place for 10 days and then plant out in full sun. I hope this helps.
