tomato seed Propagation--without cutting

Question
Well I抦 a high school senior working on a plant project. I抦 planting tomato seeds early girl hybrid to be specific and I want to test in which soil will theses tomato seeds grow the tallest and the fastest. My question to you is, weather or not my plant will grow at all because I was reading that I have germinate them first before I plant them in soil. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Nardos,
Thanx for your question.  When planting the tomato seeds, plant them about 1/4 inch deep in basic potting soil.  Make sure that the pots drain freely when you water them so that the soil does not stay soggy.  The seeds will germinate in 5-10 days at 75F indoors.  Do not plant the seeds outside if it is below 70F.  Tomato seeds must be started in a warm environment and kept warm.  Germination means the act of the seedling emerging from the seed.  The hard seed coat will give way and the root will come out and then the first two leaves which are called cotelydons or seed leaves.  When tomatoes emerge or germinate, the seedling will look like this:

Tomato seedlings need to be kept warm and not allowed to dry out but not kept soggy either.

I hope this helps.
Tom
