QuestionThanks for sending info re sago palm seeds. Yesterday, I took a sharp shevel and removed five large pups (offshoots) from the mother plant at ground level near its base. Each one is about 3/4 size of a football with 2' long leaves. I want to plant them in my garden---not in a pot. Kindly tell me how to do that. Thanks. Gen. Lambert/Fighter Pilot
AnswerHi Wayne,
Thanx for your question. When you removed the pups hopefully they had a halfway decent root system with them? You can plant them in the desired garden spot full to partial sun. Dig the hole a bit more spacious and deeper than is the rootball or knob. Make sure the roots aren't clumped or crowded and then gently secure the soil around the root ball/knob. Amend with some composted cow manure or horse manure and water well. I grew some sagos from seed once. I like the way they look but they're an indoor plant here. When I lived in California and Florida I enjoyed the Sago Palms planted at the malls and grocery stores. I hope this helps.
