QuestionYesterday, for the first time,I noticed one of my female palms had opened showing off its orange seed. I removed about a dozen---about the size of a walnut---then I reviewed info on web which stated that seed should be harvested in Jan-Feb timeframe. I live in Southwest Georgia. Are these palms seeding early? When do I harvest the seed?
AnswerHi Wayne,
Thanx for your question. Seed of the sago palm generally ripen in the January to February timeframe. You can check the viability of your seeds by placing them in a container of water. If they float, they are not viable. If they sink, they will probably germinate. The plant is not seeding early it is right on time. Harvest the seeds in January or February. They should come off of the female flower easily. Here's a link to a great website that tells you what you need to know about growing sago palms and it has some wonderful pictures. I hope this helps.
