Bird of Paradise Seeds

Question
Hi Tom
I have 3 bird of paradise in Phoenix Az. however, only 1 of them has seed pods, why is this? Do I need to do something to help the other 2 to produce seed pods?
The plants themselves are beautiful, this summer they grew to about 8 feet in height.

Answer
Hi Phyllis,
Thanx for your question.  Sounds to me like it was just a matter of pollination.  At 8 feet tall, I'm assuming yours is outdoors.  So, some of the blooms must not have gotten pollinated.  There are some cultivars that require artificial pollination which means you would have to pollinate the flowers yourself and I would bet that you would have to have at least two flowers open in order to do this (you would not be able to pollinate the same flower with it's own pollen.).  If your plants haven't been outdoors very long, it just may take time for the hummingbirds and bees to find the plants.  There has also been a shortage of bees throughout the U.S. in the past few years making for poor pollination.  I hope this helps.
Tom
