wndow sill box

Question
hi maybe you can help me. I am curious how many inches need to be between flowers when planting them into my window sill box..I see peoples windows and they look really full which makes me think that you can place roots of each flower quite close to one another .. in the ground I space 4 inches usually ... please help thank you ..

Answer
Hi Adira,
Thanx for your question.  Spacing in windowboxes depends upon how much space you have in the whole box.  Generally, in planting in large pots, urns, boxes, etc., I usually have a large central plant as the focus and then smaller plants or flowers planted around it, or, I might put one large plant in a large urn such as I do with mums in the fall because the plant will fill up the space rather quickly.  In window boxes, 2-4 inches apart should be fine for most bedding plants.  You don't want to crowd them too much.  You should water the box at least once a day if your summers are warm and twice a day if the summers are hot and dry.  Use a balanced fertilizer according to the directions on the package and your plants should be fine.  I hope this helps.
Tom
