QuestionHi Tom,
I have been nuturing a small blueberry plant by my front door. I was just
working outside and my german shepherd stepped on it and broke off its
main branch. Obviously, I realize that I have to move the plant - it won't
survive in that much traffic. I was wondering if there is any way to save the
branch that she broke off. It is about a foot long - the first four inches are
woody stem then it branches in two directions with leaves growing off both
sides. Thanks so much. Deb
AnswerHi Deb,
Thanx for your question. It is possible to root cuttings but it is the wrong time of the year. If the branch is woody (like a twig) you can cut it in 4 inch sections. Make sure there are no leaves. Dab in rooting hormone (a stronger one for fruiting canes) and you can stick them about 1 inch deep in a nursery bed (just a plot of ground you have prepared for planting outdoors) and these should root by next spring. You could start them indoors following the same instructions except you would plant them in a box of wet sand or other growing medium. Keep them warm, especially the bottom and mist them twice daily and they may root that way. I hope this helps.
Tom
