Transplanting Mature Tree

Question
We have a mature rowan tree in our garden in the Isle of Man, British Isles, which we would like to move to a another part of our garden.  Is this possible without damaging the trees root systems ?

Answer
Brenda, it is extremely difficult to move a mature tree without either damaging it to a point that it goes into shock or killing it. In order to move a tree, you must remove the root ball to a width equal to the perimeter of the tree. You must also remove the roots down to the tap or bottom of the root system. Without the correct machinery, this is not possible.

My advice would be to have an arborist (tree specialist) come to your home and assess the situation. Tree companies have the experise and equipment to tackle these types of projects. I can almost guarantee that if you attempt this on your own, you will be disappointed with the results.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
