QuestionMy ponytail palm tree died at the top and the trunk broke off then little shoots started coming out of the bottom ball. Can I separate the shoots from the parent plant to separate planters?
AnswerHi David,
Thanx for your question. Unfortunately, I am not an expert at house plants. My research indicates that you can remove the separate shoots and treat them with rooting hormone and then plant them in good potting medium. Keep warm and water enough to keep the soil from completely drying out. This plant is native to Texas and Mexico and is a member of the Agavaceae famliy (agaves). It can grow up to 30feet tall in the outdoors but is only hardy from Zones 9-11 (so it is a sub-tropical to tropical plant). It can live upwards of 30 years indoors. I don't want you to harm your plant so I refer you to the Houseplants section of Interior Decorating which can be found under the category of Home/Garden here at Allexperts. There are two experts. Both are on vacation now but I think they are more knowledgeable than I am regarding houseplants. I've never owned a ponytail palm but they certainly are interesting specimens. I hope this helps.
