Datura & Brugsmania; not blooming

Question
I have about 40 different types. They were about 9 inches tall when I planted them outside in new bed.Last year no blooms had about 3 hours sun. This year planted in a lot sunnier place they are about 6 feet tall. No blooms. I have tried bloom busters, no help, miracle grow, no help. Please tell me if there is something I can do to make them bloom.

Answer
Janice, at this time a soil test is warranted. Even though you are applying a water-soluble fertilizer high in phosphorus, you still need specific minerals in the soil, as well as a balanced ph level, to ensure abundant blooming.

There are soil test meters available in many garden centers. These meters will measure the fertility of the soil as well as the ph level, which should be at neutral or 7.0.

If you prefer, you can take the soil to your local garden center and have them test it. Just take samples from three sections of the garden bed and mix them in a bag.

My primary recommendation would be to add ample organic matter to the soil this fall. These amendments would include compost, shredded leaves, dried grass clippings, and peat. You can purchase these at any garden center or start a compost pile on your own. But fertile soil is definitely the most important factor when growing vegetables or blooming plants.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
