REPOTTING CRAPE MYRTLES

Question
ABOUT 3YRS AGO I BOUGHT 4 CRAPE MYRTLES, THEY WERE ABOUT 8" HIGH WHEN I BOUGHT THEM.WHEN I ASKED WHAT TYPE THEY WERE I WAS TOLD THEY DID NOT KNOW,THEY WERE PURCHASED CHEAP BUT UNLABELED. MY FIRST QUESTION WOULD BE, IS THERE ANY WAY OF TELLING WHAT TYPE THE ARE,ALL ARE AT SAME SIZE,3 PINK,1 LAVENDER. QUESTION 2 IS I AM READY TO REPOT THEM, IS THERE A PREFERRED TYPE OF SOIL. I LIVE IN FLORIDA AND I WAS GOING TO USE A 50-50 MIX OF NATURAL SAND SOIL FROM THE WOODS AROUND HERE AND MIRACLE GROW SOIL FOR TREES AND SHRUBS.

Answer
Hi Ken,
Thanx for your question.  I know a little about a lot of plants but I don't know a lot about cultivars and varieties as far as names or varieties go so I don't think I'd be able to tell you what type of crape myrtles you have.  You could take pictures of them and take them to the local County Extension horticultural agent and s/he might be able to tell you.  Give me your county and I'll get you the contact information.  Crape myrtle will grow in the sandy soil of south Texas or the red clay soil of Georgia.  Just make sure you amend them periodically with composted cow manure and keep them regularly watered because they're in pots and not in the ground and you usually have enough rainfall in Florida that you shouldn't have too much trouble with moisture.  I hope this helps.
Tom
