QuestionHow can I separate a large Russian Sage plant? It is beautiful and I'd like to plant more of it around my garden, but didn't know if this is possible to do without harming the plant.
Thanks for your help.
AnswerJulie, the only way is to divide the root ball. As with most perennials, you need to take a spade and drive it through the center of the root ball. You can then take the two divided plants and replant them separately. It sounds harsh, but it's actually a safe process. Just be sure to water the plants deeply for the first week to help the roots get reestablished.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
