QuestionI intend to start a commercial Apple Nursery based on using seed. It is intended to scale up Apple growing in Uganda. Where can I obtain the seed?
AnswerHi Alfred,
Thanx for your question. I do not know of any nurserymen who sell apple seeds. The reason is because unless the apple variety is an open-pollinated variety, seeds will not come true, meaning the hybrid apples have been so hybridized their progeny result in inferior quality trees and will probably not resemble the parent plants. It is better to buy certified saplings that have been grafted on to a hardy rootstock. Additionally, for your part of the world, it is going to be difficult to find an apple variety that will bloom and set fruit in your climate. The reason is that all the apple varieties I know of require a certain amount of hours at temperatures at 4.5 C or lower. Another thing, it will take 5-7 years for a seed to develop into a bearing tree. I'm sorry. I hope this helps.
