growing a plant indoors from a peach pit

Question
I want, very much, to grow a plant indoors from a peach that I just ate.
I live in New York City. I have western exposure to lots of light. How do I prepare
the seed to plant and how should I plant it?
Thank you so much in advance
Bee

Answer
Hi Bee,
Thanx for your question.  A peach is the fruit of a deciduous tree.  That means the tree loses its leaves when autumn comes and sunlight becomes weaker and this triggers hormonal changes in the tree that cause it to shed its leaves and go into dormancy or a "resting period" for the winter.  A deciduous tree that is not allowed to go dormant will eventually wear itself out and not thrive.  You might consider gowing it as a container plant and leaving it on your porch outdoors if you have one or on the roof.  Many New Yorkers garden on roofs and terraces of high rise buildings.

At any rate, I'll tell you how to start your little peach pit as I have done for countless others.  This seems to be quite a popular subject!

Wash the pit and let it dry for a few days.  Plant it two inches deep in a pot of moist but not soggy potting soil and seal this inside a plastic baggie.  Put it in the fridge for 90 days.  After that period, remove from the baggie and place in a warm room and keep it watered.  The seedling should emerge in a few weeks.  Keep the pot in a very sunny window or under a 40 watt shop light (no farther than 8" above) until the sapling is large enough to be transplanted into a larger pot.

Good luck.
Tom
