Questionwhat is the best way to propagate conifers
AnswerHi Graeme,
Thanx for your question. You can propagate conifers frim the seeds found in the cones and you can also try cuttings.
Most conifer seeds will need to be exposed to temperatures of 40 F (4.4C) or less for at least 90 days. Some may require several cold/warm cold periods before the seed breaks dormancy and germinates. You can wrap seeds in a damp paper towel and seal inside a plastic baggie and place inside the fridge for 3 months or you can plant the seeds in pots about 3 inches deep and leave outdoors for the winter. For the outdoor method, the seeds should begin to germinate as the soil warms in the spring. For the fridge method, take the seeds out of the fridge after 90 days and plant an inch (2.5 cm) deep in damp but not soggy potting soil. Germination could take several weeks to several months. I'm not sure which ones take multiple warm/cold periods to germinate but that can be researched later. Here is a link to a site that gives good instructions for propagating with cuttings.

Additionally, Allexperts has a tree expert, Jim Hyland should you prefer to contact him as he is a true tree expert and I am not. I hope this helps.
