QuestionHello, I live in Flagstaff, AZ and am very interested in the possibility of growing edible fruit here in our harsh/short growing climate. I am specifically wondering about growing some blueberry bushes. Wondering if you would have any recommendations on low h2o varieties and also if you think I would just be waisting my time even trying?
AnswerHi Samantha,
Thanx for your question. The problem for you won't be so much cold as it will be the highly alkaline soils of Arizona. Northern blueberries are hardy from zones 4-7. But they need acidic soil. You would probably have to grow them as container plants. If I were you, I would contact your local County Extension agent and ask him or her for a recommendation. Here is a link to the Coconino County Extension Service of the University of Arizona. I hope this helps.
