redbud

Question
How do I grow redbud trees from the seed pods or from the cuttings. I currently have three trees, one we bought and two others that just happened.  I have tried planting the seed pods, replanting sprouts that were in an inappropriate area and from cuttings but no success.

Answer
Hi Jan,
Thanx for your question.  If you see seedlings, dig as deeply as you can around them.  Their roots are very deep and it is difficult if not impossible to get all of it.  Next, dig a deep hole to accommodate the root and dress the hole with some composted manure. Plant the seedling about an inch lower than how it was growing.  Water at least once a week when there is no regular rain and side dress the area around the seedling with composted manure.

To grow a redbud tree from seed, rub them with sand paper until a lighter color appears on the outside or, put them in a pan and pour water that isn't quite on the boil yet over the seeds and let them sit for 24 hours.  Next, put the seed in a damp paper towel and place inside a plastic baggie and leave in the refrigerator (not freezer) for 90 days.  After that, bring back out in to a warm area and plant in individual cells, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.  Germination should take place in 2 or 3 weeks at 70-75 degrees F.  I hope this helps.
Tom
