QuestionDo pond Iris winter in Kansas, or must these be taken in-doors?
Thank you!
AnswerHi debz,
Thanx for your question. As a Kansan, I can tell you from first hand experience that there are a variety of water irises that do well in Kansas ponds, including overwintering. I have grown Louisiana iris, Virginia iris, Iris pseudocorus and there are others that grow well here such as Siberian and Japanese iris that will grow well at the margins of your pond. I had a beautiful Black Gamecock Louisiana iris which grew into a huge clump at the corner of my pond and would produce 50 or more flowers at a time. It was a wonderful plant. I lost it though when I pulled it out in the fall for separating, got distracted forgot about it and then discovered the frozen clump in the dead of winter. They winter fine in the pond but don't leave the rhizomes exposed. If you live near Lawrence, there is a wonderful watergardening center called Water's Edge. http://www.watersedge.com/
By the way, I have lotus too and they do wonderfully in my watergarden. I hope this helps.
