QuestionMy six year old daughter, Anna, has successfully started six apple saplings
from seeds, They are about 6 inches tall and heathy. We realize that we need
to transplant them into a larger pot from reading past questions, but they are
developing light white hazy areas about 1/4 of an inch in diameter on the
leaves. We do not know if this is normal or if we ned to treat them for
something. We have been carefully wiping the the leaves off but the spots
seem to return. Also they have been inside until now and we have just
transfered then to the outside in the hope that direct exposure to the sun will
help. Thank you,
Thanks
AnswerHi Jeffrey,
Thanx for your question. It sounds like you may have some spider mites on your seedlings. Continue to wipe off the residue, you can also wash them with an insecticidal soap available at your local nursery. Please remember, when transfering plants that have been grown indoors for any length of time, transfer to the outdoors should be gradual. This is called a hardening off period. Always place plants that have been living indoors in a protected area outdoors where the plants are not immediately exposed to direct sunlight. Dappled sunlight or partial shade is fine, otherwise you could literally sunburn your plants. Keep them in the protected area for about 10 days and then move them out into direct sunlight. This should do the trick. I hope this helps.
