QuestionI'm not sure if orange seeds are somewhat like apple seeds in how long it might take to grow, or even if the seeds from oranges we buy in stores are capable of growing if we plant them. My daughter has been asking to plant all the seeds that come out of the fruit we've been eatting. Apple and oranges are a big hit. I have already read about the apples :) How about the oranges? IS it possible to plan one of these seeds and produce a plant? (even if it doesn't produce fruit or whichever, the thrill of planting the orange and watching it at least poke up from the soil will be rewarding to her) .. what would I need to do to make sure we do it correctly if its possible? And how long would it take for it to sprout about soil?
Thanks a bunch for your help!

AnswerHi April,
Thanx for your question. Citrus seeds sprout readily. Just clean off the pulp and plant them about 1/2 inch deep in moist potting soil and keep the pot moist but not soggy. Also, keep it warm. Germination takes place in 10 days or so. I've grown a number of citrus, lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit from seed. It is easy and it is fun, especially for the kids because they grow pretty fast at first. You can treat the plant as a shrub by cutting back the top when it reaches about 3 or 4 feet tall and yes in time, you may even get fruit, but it will definitely bloom and the scent is intoxicating. I lived in Phoenix in the late 70s and the scent of the orange blossoms in the Spring was absolutely enchanting. If you don't live in a frost free area, bring the shrub in when it starts to get cold. Citrus will survive light freezes but should not be exposed to it for long periods of time. Keep the shrub indoors in the winter and reduce watering an do not fertilize. Once temps are steadily above 45 degrees at night, take the shrub outdoors for the spring and summer. The plant will definitely benefit from this. I hope this helps.
