grapes from seeds

Question
QUESTION: Hi Tom, I planted some grape seeds two years ago and cut them back to about 3/4 feet tall last year. They are doing well. I was just told that I will not get gapes on vines that were started from seeds. Am I just wasting my time? Thanks, Vinny

ANSWER: HI Vinny,
Thanx for your question.  You may get grapes but chances are, unless these were wild grapes and I'm assuming they were store-bought fruit, this is a hybrid.  When one plants seeds of a hybrid, the resulting plants seldom resemble the parent and fruit will definitely not resemble the original fruit.  You can go ahead and try it though and it will be fun to see what you get.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Tom, The grapes were from a vineyard, they were not store bought. Do I have a better shot! Thanks again, Vinny

Answer
Hi Vinny,
Thanx for your question.  Vineyard grapes, better shot?  Probably not unless these were from an open-pollinated variety.  Ask the farmer if they are open-pollinated plants or heirloom grapes.  If they are, you'll have a good shot.  If not, they're hybrids just like the store-bought grapes and you'll have the crapshoot.  Good luck and I hope this helps.
