is my mimosa tree dead?

Question
I planted a Mimosa tree last spring and it did wonderful all summer with robust healthy foliage and brilliant flowers.  With it already being May, I expected it to be showing some sign of life by now.  I live in Zone 5 and my residence is in Northern Utah.  We had a pretty cold winter but nothing below zero degrees.  The tree is on the south facing side of my house so it did get sun on it all winter.  I Have cut back some of the branches to see if there is any "green" showing but it doesn't look good.  The main trunk is still flexible which is leading me to believe it might still be alive.  Is this tree a late bloomer? or should I dig it up and replace it.

thanks,
KENNETH

Answer
Hi Kenneth,

Thanx for your question.  Generally, mimosas don't do well in the north.  I have noticed in my area, they are rare north of Kansas City.  We have them here in the Kansas City area and they become more plentiful as one goes south.  Your area may be too cold for them.  ON the other hand, mind is just now starting to show green and it is always late in May when it finally leafs out.  So, wait a few weeks longer and then if there is no sign of green, it's probably dead.  I hope this helps.
Tom
